What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is the accumulation of fluid (water and proteins) in the tissues of the body.  This fluid is usually  removed by the Lymphatic System but parts of this system has been removed during surgery or is damaged due to treatment  like radiation.

The high protein contents of this fluid can cause additional problems such as hardening of the tissues and infections if left untreated.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy?

Gentle, hands-on manual Lymphatic Drainage technique used to redirect the accumulated fluids to healthy lymph drainage areas called lymph nodes.

What is Compression Therapy?

This therapy follows Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy by using stretch bandages or compression garments or a combination of both.  This therapy prevents re-accumulation of fluid in the tissue and supports the effects of Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (MLD).

Family Involvement

As with most therapies, the success increases with getting the family involved.  It is our practice to train a family member to continue therapy when the patient has been released from active care or when the patient is not in the office
